HOMEFOOD CONCEPTTHE GREAT HISTORY OF BELGIAN FRIES Print this page

Pommes Frites in France, Chips in the UK, French Fries in America, Frites in Belgium – everyone understands the appeal of a perfectly fried potato: piping hot, lightly salted and delicious.
The origin of the fried potato is hotly contested. The unproven story is that fried potatoes were common in the Dinant region of Belgium. During WW1, American soldiers had these warm, filling snacks for the first time and called them French fries, as it was the official language of the Belgian Army at that time. One thing is sure; by the 1830’s, deep fried potatoes were popular in both France and Belgium. And Doornik, Belgium is the location of the oldest frituur, where selling these tasty treats started the business that BelFrit is now offering around the globe.

The general consensus is that no matter who invented the fried potatoes, the Belgians perfected them.  As part of the national dish, and incorporated into a large number of its culinary specialties, fries in Belgium are made from potatoes, double fried to crispy perfection, lightly salted and served with a hearty portion of creamy mayonnaise. BelFrit wants nothing more then to honour this tradition, complementing this snack with other examples of Belgium's finest, such as the sweet Belgian waffle.
